Dr.-Ing.

Karsten Hochkirch studied mechanical engineering (BSc equivalent in 1990) and naval architecture at the Technical University of Berlin (Diplom-Ingenieur in 1994, Doktor-Ingenieur in 2000), focusing on sailing yacht design and analysis. He is a computer wizard with special skills in various programming techniques. He favors the open world of unix in which he realized both software and hardware solutions for the complex measurement system DYNA - the TU Berlin’s sailing yacht dynamometer that he developed together with Prof. Brandt (1996 to 2000). Further experience includes project work in the application of viscous and potential flow codes (1994 to 1996) and measurements and velocity prediction for modern and historical sailing vessels (1991 up to now). He has published internationally on the subjects of sailing performance measurement, analysis and optimization as well as geometric modeling.

Karsten Hochkirch lectures Aero- and Hydrodynamics of Sailing Yachts as well as Hydrostatics and Stability of Ships at the Technische Universität Berlin. He is a Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (USA) and of the Schiffbautechnische Gesellschaft (Germany).

Karsten Hochkirch (born in Berlin in 1968) is married and father of two children. His hobbies include old FIAT convertibles (and their restoration), old sailing yachts (and their restoration) and old motorcycles (and ...). He holds the captain’s license for traditional sailing vessels (up to 55m) on which he spends his vacation introducing adolescents to the art of seamanship on tall and schooner rigged ships. He speaks English, German and Spanish.
