Special Issue of Ship Technology Research “Simulation-driven Design of Maritime Systems” on the occasion of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Horst Nowacki’s 90th birthday
On the special occasion of the upcoming 90th birthday of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Horst Nowacki, former head of the section Ship Design at the Technical University Berlin, Germany, and former professor at the University of Michigan, USA, a special issue of Ship Technology Research shall be published in the first half of 2023.
Ship Technology Research by Taylor & Francis Online is a peer-reviewed journal that presents and discusses the latest developments in research, design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance concerning ships and offshore structures.

Duisburg-Essen, Germany, along with two guest editors, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Apostolos Papanikolaou and
Dr.-Ing. Stefan Harries, would like to call for papers in the wider field of “Simulation-driven Design of Maritime Systems”.
Both guest editors – Apostolos Papanikolaou, emeritus professor at the National Technical University Athens, Greece, and Stefan Harries, member of the executive board of FRIENDSHIP SYSTEMS in Potsdam, Germany – look back at inspirational years with Horst Nowacki. The special issue will be an occasion to honor Prof. Nowacki’s exceptional achievements. In the context of naval architecture and ocean engineering, topics for which papers are sought are
- Ship design and numerical ship hydrodynamics
- Geometric modeling and parametric design
- Formal optimization and machine learning
- Product data technology and data exchange
- History of Ship Theory and Ship Design
The deadline for manuscripts is March 31, 2023, to be submitted via Taylor & Francis’ Editorial Manager. All scientific contributions will be peer-reviewed according to the high standards of Ship Technology Research.
In addition, the guest editors would be very happy to receive an informal and short feedback via email by December 15, 2022, indicating whether or not you are planning to contribute an original research paper.
Complementing the technical and scientific papers, the guest editors also invite former colleagues, fellow scientists, co-workers, companions, and friends of Horst Nowacki’s to send words of greeting, share experiences, hand in photos, and extend their warm wishes. This material will be reviewed and subsequently shared on a dedicated website, creating a document of personal value referenced within the special issue’s editorial.
